Secure hosting of the EBMT Registry application

EBMT

The European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (ebmt.org) is a globally respected medical and scientific organization focused on advancing cellular therapy and stem cell transplantation. One of its core assets is the EBMT Registry, a vital medical database supporting research, clinical trials, and data analysis across Europe and beyond.

The EBMT Registry contains patient clinical data, including aspects of the diagnosis and disease, first-line treatments, haematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) or cell-therapy-associated procedures, transplant type, donor type, stem cell source, complications, and outcomes. Patients are followed up according to a pre-defined schedule.

The project

To ensure the security, scalability, and availability of this sensitive platform, EBMT partnered with NubeX to design, build, and operate a secure, modern public cloud infrastructure on Amazon Web Services (AWS).

This project was a joint effort involving EdenceHealth, Studio Hyperdrive, and NubeX – three Cronos companies – each contributing their domain expertise. NubeX was responsible for the cloud architecture, operational management, and DevOps enablement.

The engagement included:

  • Designing, implementing, and managing a secure AWS-based cloud platform using Amazon EKS and other native services to host the EBMT Registry.
  • Providing DevOps support to EBMT and its development partners, ensuring smooth release and deployment processes.
  • Delivering operational management of the entire cloud environment, including containers and servers.
  • Offering service delivery management and a technology service desk to support all in-scope services.
  • Setting up and maintaining VPN network connections between AWS and the on-premise locations of EBMT and its service partners.
  • Managing user access and identity within the client VPN infrastructure.
  • Advising on cloud security best practices and continuously optimizing the environment for performance, security, and reliability.

By moving to AWS, EBMT now benefits from a robust, compliant, and scalable cloud infrastructure that enables secure collaboration across its network of partners, improves development velocity, and ensures the registry remains available and performant for years to come.

NubeX’s expert approach sets them apart from the competition. Their work is grounded in best practices, agile methodologies, and clear communication. NubeX made it possible to set up the infrastructure for the new EBMT Registry, preparing it for future challenges while staying aligned with the client’s sensitive requirements and needs. They have proven to be excellent at managing and improving cloud-neutral infrastructure.
