GOB Mobility manages the platform behind the driving license and boating license examination centers of Brussels and Wallonia. NubeX provides the AWS cloud hosting and infrastructure operations for this environment.
GOB (Gewestelijke Overheidsdienst Brussel) runs examination centers where candidates take their driving and boating license exams. The system needs to be up during exam hours, respond quickly, and connect securely to physical exam locations spread across the region. Some of those locations don't even have proper IT infrastructure.
This is a multi-party Cronos project: NubeX does the cloud hosting and infra, Rhea handles application management and development.
High-Availability Compute: Production workloads run on instances distributed across two AWS Availability Zones, fronted by both Application and Network Load Balancers for traffic distribution and internal service routing.
Compute: Production runs on multiple EC2 instances across two Availability Zones in eu-west-1, behind both an Application Load Balancer and an internal Network Load Balancer.
Database: Amazon RDS for Oracle, Multi-AZ in production. Synchronous replication to a standby in the second AZ, automatic failover.
Connectivity: 2x AWS Direct Connect dedicated connections through the Cronos Private Cloud (CPC) data centers. Exam centers connect via CPC to reach the application over private links.
If this platform goes down during exam hours, people can't take their tests.
The requirements:
Uptime. Exams run on strict schedules. The production setup needs to survive a full AZ failure without anyone noticing.
Private connectivity. Exam data can't go over the public internet. The centers are physical buildings, some with proper infra, some with basically just a DSL line and a prayer.
Access control. GOB, SPW (Wallonia), and the Vlaamse Overheid all need access to parts of the environment. Each via their own isolated, encrypted tunnel.
Database resilience. Oracle databases with exam records and candidate data need synchronous replication and automatic failover without touching the application.
Amazon RDS for Oracle:
This is what makes this project different from a standard cloud setup. The exam centers are physical locations that need private network access to the application in AWS.
Direct Connect: 2x dedicated connections between CPC data centers and AWS. No public internet involved. Consistent latency, predictable bandwidth.
Exam center connectivity (two models):
Centers with a data center connect to the CPC backbone via the best available carrier (Eurefibre, Destiny, Proximus, or Orange), evaluated per location.
Centers without a data center get dual Destiny routers.
Even the smallest exam location stays connected if the ISP goes down or a router fails.
Government access: IPSec VPN tunnels from the CPC firewall to GOB, SPW, and Vlaamse Overheid. Each entity gets its own isolated tunnel, configured together with their network teams.
Production spans two AZs with failover at compute and database level. Dual Direct Connect links and redundant routers at exam centers keep sessions running. Government entities connect through isolated VPN tunnels. NubeX provides 24/7 monitoring and operational management.
The platform runs exams without interruption.
